It’s been a few years, but the Bridgeport High School Alumni & Friends Strawberry Sale is back for 2023. Orders will be taken in April with a tentative pickup date of Friday, May 12. Prices for half and full flats will be announced as soon as they are available. As always, the berries will be purchased from Goots Produce, owned and operated by Bridgeport’s James Goots.
Alumni Board President Teresa Lunsford said the organization is happy to bring back the fundraiser, which has been quite popular in past years.
“I’ve always enjoyed the sale for three reasons: It’s around Mother’s Day and I give strawberries to some of the important women in my life, the money raised goes toward funding scholarships for BHS seniors – and I just love strawberries,” she said.
The sale has traditionally been the foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year. It was board member and former BHS journalism teacher Alice Rowe who suggested the sale several years ago and it has been embraced by the community. The sale was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic and is just now returning.
With fundraisers and personal donations, more than $60,000 in college scholarships are awarded by BHS Alumni & Friends Foundation to BHS seniors each year.
Order forms will soon be available. In the meantime, the foundation is collecting recipes for strawberry desserts, salads, jams and whatever else you cook up in your kitchen.
