The United Way of Harrison and Doddridge Counties proudly celebrated Dr. Kelly R. Nelson, M.D., at the Mountaineer of Honor award ceremony held at Pete Dye Golf Club on the evening of April 1. Dr. Nelson, a dedicated physician and philanthropist, was recognized for his remarkable professional achievements and selfless contributions to the community.
Stephanie Goff, Mountaineer of Honor Committee Chair and Vice President of United Way of Harrison and Doddridge Counties, expressed her admiration, saying, “Dr. Nelson has touched so many lives with his unwavering commitment to healthcare and philanthropy. His leadership with Medbrook Children’s Charity has been transformational, especially to local youth. It is an honor to celebrate his contributions to our state and we hope his story will lead others to action.”
Martin Howe, Executive Director of United Way HDC, also shared his thoughts during the celebration. “Dr. Nelson’s impact goes far beyond his medical expertise—he has built a legacy of generosity and community support that will inspire future generations. It’s a privilege to recognize him as our Mountaineer of Honor.”
Lisa Lang, the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, added, “Kelly Nelson’s selection as the Mountaineer of Honor feels like the natural course of events for our community-minded Mountaineer. Tonight, we celebrate his passion for service, exemplified through projects like Medbrook Children’s Charity, which has touched countless lives over its remarkable 25 years of purpose.”
The event featured heartfelt speeches from esteemed speakers, including David Alvarez, Jaclyn Rominger, and Larry Mazza. “Not all superheroes wear capes. Some wear a doctor’s white jacket or scrubs, and that’s who we have here, Kelly Nelson, a superhero who has earned and deserves this recognition for a lifetime of caring and loving the people he touches,” said Mazza, who had the honor of presenting Dr. Nelson with the award statue.
“I’m very humbled,“ said Nelson, “I’m not a Mountaineer by birth, I’m a Mountaineer by choice, and to be recognized by the community that’s done so much for me and the charity I run, is just amazing.”
Dr. Jaclyn Rominger, Vice President of Medbrook Children’s Charity, praised Nelson.
“There is nobody more deserving of this recognition. Dr. Kelly Nelson is an inspiration to me and so many others in this community. He has mastered the art of giving back by making it fun— ‘Party with a Purpose,’ as he calls it. There is a waitlist for his events. He has been able to raise more money in our small area than even imaginable. Over $2 million has been donated to organizations in need over the past 25 years. He is a true Mountaineer of Honor,” she said.
Representatives from The Challenger League, Harrison County Schools, The Salvation Army, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, and Building Hope also shared inspiring remarks about the profound impact Dr. Nelson’s leadership has had on their organizations. Their testimonials underscored the tangible difference his philanthropic efforts have made in the lives of countless individuals.
