Bridgeport City Council is moving ahead with the engineering phase for The Bridge Sports Complex Phase I Construction Project.
Although it still has to be designed, Council member Jon Griffith, who is the chairman of The Bridge Advisory Committee, said the project is a large rectangular multi-purpose field.
“The applications for the field won’t be finalized until the design is finalized,” said Griffith.
Droo Callahan, the general manager of The Bridge, gave a brief presentation to Council. He explained that the multi-purpose field will be big enough to hold two football fields, as well as multiple soccer, baseball, and other fields.
“It’s versatile for use by any sport that uses turf,” said Callahan.
In this case, it will be Field Turf, which is also the company and product that did the work for the multipurpose field behind the Citynet Center. This even larger field will not be in an area behind the Citynet Center. Instead, if you are looking at the front of the building it will be on acreage situated to the left.
Although a price will be determined after it leaves the design phase and goes to a contractor bid phase, it is almost certainly going to be well into the seven figures. The multi-purpose field behind the Citynet Center came in at a cost of roughly $2.5 million. This field will be much larger.
“We know it will see use. There is always demand for space to handle all kinds of athletic activities,” said Griffith.
The project will be funded through a combination of the 1 percent sales tax that goes to The Bridge and revenues generated by The Bridge. Mayor Andy Lang emphasized that this would have “no impact” on the city’s general revenue fund.
