For fans of the new pickleball facility at Deegan and Hinkle Lakes Park, there is more good news.
Work is moving ahead this week on a new steel pavilion and shelter directly beside the facility. The building is 16×20 feet and staff from both Bridgeport Public Works and the Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Department are constructing it, said Parks and Recreation Coordinator Amy Callahan.
Public Works Crew and Parks crews are overseeing the construction. The pavilion is part of the original plans and funding package.
“Once finished, there will be electric there. The shelter will include a grill, and picnic tables have also been ordered,” said Callahan. “The drinking fountain will be installed soon, which will be nice for the facility.”
There is additional work that will be done once that is completed, said Callahan. She pointed out that while cameras are operational near the courts, there will be additional cameras added soon.
“We’re increasing lighting in the parking lot as well,” said Callahan.
Prep work is finished as bases have been installed and hooked to electric. The poles have also been received by the city, but the decorative domes have yet to arrive.
Callahan said the domes and poles will match the decorative utility poles seen along Main Street in the downtown corridor. The city usually has domes in reserve, but all were used after a storm damaged multiple domes and depleted the reserves.
“Once everything is in place, it’s going to look nice, but also be very functional,” said Callahan.
Work is expected to be completed before the end of the warm weather months.
